Opiates with alcohol can be deadly quickly. Both depress the CNS. Together, they can cause respiratory failure.

As for overdosing on pills, it can be done. Just much easier to do with a drink or 4.

Edit-- A story on the radio said he may have been on anxiety pills. Benzos and opiates are not a safe combo
