degree-not-worth-debt-cnnmoney: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance
After reading the article above, I was wondering everyone's opinion on college. The article itself is negative about college. Although I think part of it is the lack of planning by most people at 17, which is to be expected. I do not believe many 17 year olds understand the crushing debt load of 100,000+ with no asset to sell to pay for it.
Myself, when I returned to school, I had the option of a top private school vs. a state college (with some free cash). As I knew I would be heading to law school, I chose the state college. Graduated debt free. Law school will be a different beast. But even there, I gave up a slightly higher ranked school (which would have crushed me with $240,000 in debt) for still a top school with debt load about half. Thus, college and education is worth the price IMO. But debt factor has to be an element of any decision. If I had not planned on going to law school, I would have chose a larger state research university over the private in order to save money but still have a employable degree from a respected college.
Unless you get into HYP, then you go there, debt be damned.
