  • Met a buddhist monk today

So I have been seeing this thai girl for a while and she takes me to this buddhist temple. These monks are hardcore. When you talk to them in the temple its a sign of respect to sit on your knees because to show them your feet is offensive. They can't touch women at all. Anything they give you or you give them has to be placed on the floor in front of them. They don't use money at all and only eat one meal a day which is breakfast. The food they eat all comes from donations so it could be anything. No tv no radio. They just eat sleep and pray all day. Very humbling experience to see how these guys live.

That is neat to experience someone else's culture. Someone so very different. They don't do any type of farming or gardening or anything for food? I'm reading a book right now that talks a lot about monks/monastery (fiction, but lots of history). Interesting.

Yea I would have thought they would be into farming and living off the land. This donation crap seems a little shitty to me.

I guess I understand some donation since they dont use money, but I would think they'd want to farm and garden so they'd be eating healthy and "earning" their meals, per se. Donations could be ramen noodles and chef boyardee.

Agree, seems like the whole living off the land thing would be right up their alley.

I don't think they are allowed to farm. They can only accept food people give them.

That's cool Redback. I am always intrigued by other cultures and others way of life. Are you thinking about joining their Monastery?
