Coroner: Pills, drug paraphernalia discovered

A Washington & Jefferson College senior found dead Tuesday morning in his dormitory room may have died of a drug overdose.

James R. (Jim) Gross, 22, of the Sharpsburg section of Pittsburgh, was found slumped in a chair in front of his computer about 9:30 by a roommate, Tim Buhit. The two were roommates in a second-floor suite at the new residence hall at the corner of North College and East Beau streets.

Each suite in the dormitory, which opened in August, can accommodate four students, with separate bedrooms and a common living area.

Gross, who graduated from Kiski Prep School, was last seen alive by his roommate about midnight Monday, said Washington County Coroner S. Timothy Warco.

Warco said pills and drug paraphernalia were found in the student's room. The suspected drugs and paraphernalia will be sent to a laboratory for analysis. The coroner said empty liquor bottles were found in a common hall in the suite. Those bottles, however, he said, could have been souvenirs.

Gross had been ill for last several weeks and was taking over-the-counter cold medication and antibiotics, Warco said.

An autospy was performed Tuesday night and Warco saidtoxicology reports could take several days.

The senior psychology major was scheduled to graduate this spring, college spokeswoman Rita McConnell said.

McConnell, who said she was unaware of the possibility of a drug overdose until after a 3 p.m. news conference, said she does not believe W&J has any more of a drug problem than any other college.

"Being young, they may experiment from time to time," she said. "This may give us a reason to see just how prevalent this may be. But I'm sure we'll wait for a complete toxicology report before making any decisions."

The death is being investigated by Warco's office along with Washington police and college security.

McConnell said 93 juniors and seniors live in the co-ed residence hall. The liberal arts college has an enrollment of 1,250 students.

"It's shocking to hear," said sophomore Doug Johnston. "I did not know him, but the news shakes you up a bit."

Nate Arruda, a sophomore who also did not know Gross, said he was a big kid who worked out in the school's gym on a regular basis.

"He was working out three or four times a week," Arruda said. "I never thought this would happen."

"This is a small school and if you didn't know him, you know somebody who did," said sophomore Jamie Johnston. "I didn't know him but I know people who are affected by it.

"You never think this could happen here," she said.

McConnell acknowledged the students' sentiments.

"A number of the students are upset. We have grief counselors available as needed for the students," she said. "His (roommates) are also undergoing counseling. We will also find them another place to live. I'm sure they are dealing with difficult emotional feelings."

McConnell said this is the first student to die on campus in recent memory.
