  • Thoughts about taxing unhealthy food, NY Times article

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/op...odaysheadlines

After reading the above article, I was amazed. It talks about taxing sodas/sugary drinks. With a 2 cent per ounce tax, the US government would save $30 billion dollars, 1.5 million Americans would not become obese, 400,000 Americans would avoid diabetes, and fresh fruit and veggies would be subsidized (thus cheaper.)

On the negative side (according to the article), people would complain about a nanny state and there would be blow back. That is about it.

The article is not short, but a great read

Everyone's thoughts? Patently our views will not be representative, but still curious.

heard about this and i think its a great idea. There is a proposed alcohol tax increase in Maryland which is great and now this soda, candy, etc... tax hike. I fully agree with this and the should proceed.

It wouldn't avoid shit. If they think 16 cents extra per 8oz soda is going to stop anybody they are out of their fucking mind. This country is the land of the plenty, all you can eat buffets and 99 cents whoopers. So who ever came up with those number was smoking crack. Only number that told the truth was government making 30 billon dollars.

The tax money would go to bullshit programs, not making fresh fruit and vegetables cheaper.

Americans would still be fat fucks with diabetes.

More government intrusion in your personal life is NEVER the answer.

          NEVER.
