I looked into the Nook. it is twice as expensive as the Kindle. More than a reader, not quite a tablet. It definitely is a different beast compared to the Kindle. Not sure it is a fair comparison.
My kid has a nook also, Here mom did all the research and went with the nook not sure why? but looking at the screen it looks pretty crazy 100% nicer than any book print. I belive it has some special screen? Books are also cheeper on those things than a real paper book.

It has a back lit screen, while the Kindle does not, just e-ink. It's definitely a personal preference, but the back light bothers a lot of people's eyes.
e-ink most accurately recreates what a real book looks like.
the nook is a jack of all trades and a master of none. its not as easy on the eyes or accurate to a real book as a kindle, and its not as good as a tab device like an itab for backlit screen, reading magaizines, the paper etc..
