I might start deer hunting this year. I bought a .308 rifle, but sold it soon after. I don't like the local outdoor range, so I just don't feel that I can get proficient enough with the rifle. What are the advantages of a crossbow over a compound bow? Which one should I start with? I like the fact that I will have to be a lot closer for a bow kill.

Thought about getting a Glock 10mm and stalking deer with that bitch.

First you have to see if the state you in crossbows are leagle... they arent in a lot of places.:wack: ( ah.. I see your here in the fine state of Ga!!!)

Both are very capable of killing deer elk bear moose ect. p Problem is you have to really pratice a lot because if you make a bad hit, the chances of recovery go way down. You have to be really confident and sure of the shot before you take it.

I limit my bow and the crossbow to 30 yd shots. They and my shooting capabilities can kill at 50 yds easy. But I just dont take the chance. If the animal moves i step it goes from kill zone to gut shot. I dont want that. clean kill or no shot.

I would recommend stick with that .308 and get some kills under your belt. then when you get some experiance hunting and reading sign, how to set up, where to set up. then go for the arrows. and take it to the next level.

get that .308 zeroed for hitting 2 inches high at 100 yds and you be pretty much point of aim out to about 250 yds :thumup: 150 grain bullet and you'll knock the hell out of um!!!:thumup:

Pistol hunting is TOUGH, I have killed a few wild hogs with my XD .45 at like 5 and 7 steps...
