i was asked if i was muslim...

this super religious muslim woman at work today came up and asked if i was muslim. i said no. she keps asking what religion i was so i said "non practicing muslim" and she kept going on and on. finally i said "my parents are muslim, they taught me islam and such but i reject the notion of God because ultimately there is no proof of a higher being." the lady walked off from my window and went to my gay coworker's without a word.

i hate when people just assume i'm a follower of one religion because of my skin tone. and then if you explain that you don't follow a religion it's so hard for their wee little brains. it's especially common amongst the brown culture.

I think religious people of any color can't deal with agnosticism. Not sure it is restricted to the "brown culture" although people in the west who are a bit more exposed to a culture of science and reason may be more tolerant.

What I find odd is that someone would walk up to you and ask your religion. Seems like a workplace harassment case waiting to happen. I would think companies would have training for new employees specifically warning against such stuff.

well, it was a customer, and for it to be a case i would have to file with management and they would have to intervene (i'm sure if i told my manager that i didn't feel comfortable with her he would have stepped in).

the company that i work for is actually quite accepting of all backgrounds. we have probably the most eclectic corporate environment in terms of diversity. never once was i asked about religion unless i had a rapport built with that person.

Scrum, you do have to admit, it's totally the brown older women who ask the most personal questions on their first encounter.

I agree... people who grew up in Asia have a hard time getting out of the culture where religion has permeated every aspect of society. They just can't deal with the type of society we have here where one's religion is (at least most of the time) irrelevant to daily life and interactions with others.

It is true mofo especially with white people down here in the south. When we see an arab looking person the first thing that pops in their head is Islam/Muslim. I remember the first time I picked up a Koran out of curiosity I started reading and was like wtf? I was reading it backwards lmao I didn't know they read right to left instead of left to right. I wouldn't sweat it though like you said your just you:)
