Flu and cold both caused by virus allergy is caused by allergens which is only the shit in the air we breath every day. Sometimes you body thinks what you breath is something dangerous for your body and reacts to to it by making you cough and sneeze (trying to get rid of what you have)

Usual symptoms for allergy is itchy throat, eyes and sneezing. You might stuffy from nasal inflammation but not so much runny nose or sore throat. If you get some achy muscles and joints in next day or so you'll have all the symptoms of a cold or flu. :)
