  • First Boxing Gym Session Tonight

Going to my first ever boxing class tonight. Real pumped. I go for a week to find out whether I like it or not and whether I want to enroll. Apparently there is a BJJ guy there as well, but they don't heavily publicize it because they are trying to keep the big egos out and keep people in who are going to take it seriously. Apparently boxing is 2x a week, with open sparring on Friday. Grappling/BJJ is another 2 nights a week, but I don't have much info on that yet. I've only spoken with the boxing guy. Last but not least they teach Jeet Kune Do on Saturdays. Anyone got any info on that?

This is my first martial art experience ever besides beating the bag in the garage. Pretty pumped. Any advice is appreciated.

Well I was talking about the BJJ portion to the boxing guy, who didn't really know much about that program. They keep them separate. I will find the info about the BJJ instructor. If it ends up being no good I'd like to stick with the boxing/striking part for a while and then move to another BJJ place in the future if I'm inclined.

I'm going to stick with this. I just want to make sure it's worth the $80 a month! (By the way, is that reasonable?)

Make sure you 1st learn how to roll with a Gim then transition to no gi; DON'T try to learn the No Gi 1st!

You will only hurt your future game on the mat, this is a fact! Roll with people(if the place you roll at does that)who are more advanced. Not necessarily higher ranking in belts because that doesn't mean shit. I've seen Brown belts get slapped around by Purple belts and so on.

                  A little extreme.

If you have ZERO interest in gi, then don't ever put on the fucking gi. Do it in the order you want.
Grappling improves grappling. You just don't have your grips in nogi. |Position, pressure, still run the game.

Just got back. I'm tired as shit. That was a blast, and a shitload harder than it looked. We warmed up with shadow boxing drills and a few 3 minute rounds of jump rope. Then we moved to the pads. There were about 15 students, 3 instructors, and 2veteran students who were helping out some of the new guys with pads. I was with the head instructor with two other guys. We started out with a jab/jab/cross combo. (1/1/2 I guess? I forget already) So we start hitting the mits. And I look around, and I'm like "yeah its louder when I do it. I got some power". Fast forward about 48 seconds. I realize my arms are now heavy as shit. So lesson 1, don't punch as hard as fucking possible the entire time. Got it.

So we continue with this same combo for a bit. Everytime its my turn, the instructor says "keep your hands up". I'm thinking, "this guy is a broken record, I've watched videos on youtube, my stance is perfect. My hands are up" He says it about 2 more times, and I just nod like "got it". Next time I go in, as soon as I go in with my right cross he smacks me across the head with the mit while saying "hands up". Lesson 2, keep your hands up. Got it.

We do a few conditioning drills and a few more combos on the mits. We finally get paired up for some sparring drills. Not sure what you call it, but we took turns going offense/defense for 30 seconds at a time, going very light. Actually barely supposed to make contact. I'm with one of the veteran guys. About 5'9" 35 years old or so. Says he's been boxing about 10 years. When it was my turn on defense I felt pretty good. Bobbin, weavin, and then he gets low and throws a right cross to the gut. Nothin on it of course, but it made me realize, "shit I forgot I had to worry about that too".

Overall it was very humbling, but it was a fucking blast. I am dead right now and chugging water. I definately look forward to going back Wednesday, and I wish I would have gone earlier instead of being such a pussy.
