First of all, "tearing space apart" is just a catchy headline and shouldn't be taken literally. Also, we don't quite know what's happening at the singularity in a black hole where all the mass of the black hole is concentrated in an infinitesimally small point. Our physics breaks down there. Maybe the melding of general relativity and quantum mechanics through the so-called Theory of Everything will shed light on this.
