Editor-in-chief Angus McKenzie, who took to the stage to announce that the 2012 Volkswagen Passat had beaten out 35 competitors to claim the magazine's 2012 Car of the Year award. Each vehicle was evaluated on six criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value and performance for intended function.
