Houston’s rising star quarterback David Carr is having a very good year (6.9 yards per pass play against teams that allow 6.0 yppp), but he’s out for this game with a high ankle sprain suffered in last week’s loss at Indianapolis. Veteran backup Tony Banks takes over the reigns, but I expect a significant drop in production given Banks’ lifetime average of just 5.3 yppp (the league average is usually around 6.0 yppp). The emergence of rookie running back Domanick Davis (238 yards at 4.6 ypr in starts the last two weeks) gives the Texans a good ground game and I think their offense will be decent overall even with Banks at quarterback. Carolina hasn’t been anything special defensively this year (5.3 yards per play allowed to teams that combine to average 5.4 yppl on offense), so Houston should put up a decent number of points here at home. Carolina’s offense is based on the strong running of Stephen Davis (839 yards at 5.1 ypr) and DeShaun Foster (217 yards at 5.2 ypr) and that rushing assault should work well against a soft Houston defense that’s given up 4.2 ypr this season to teams that combine to average just 3.8 ypr on offense for the season. Panthers’ quarterback Jake Delhomme is a below average passer (5.7 yppp against teams that allow 6.3 yppp), but he should put up better numbers against the league’s worst pass defense (8.1 yppp allowed to teams that average 6.8 yppp on offense). Carolina’s conservative nature will keep them from taking full advantage of that horrible Texans’ secondary and it should keep Houston in this game.
