Modern science and many of its fundamentals have there origins in the Islamic world starting around 100 A.D. all the way up until around the 1450's. Copernicus got many of his ideas from Islamic Astronomers.
One of the main reasons it slowed down and the Western world sort of took over as the hub of science is because of the written language being much more difficult and time consuming in the Islamic world. It was an art form in a sense to them. The Islamic world failed to embrace new technologies like the printing press and thus new science and information took a much longer time to move around compared to the western world.
