Going to take a day trip to key west on friday after we get to miami. I have heard that the oversees highway is only 1 lane for both directions. Does anyone with any experiance driving this road have any suggestions? Like would it be best to leave early in the morning like 5-6am? Any recomendations for Good places to go in key west? Thanks for any help. MrsP, have you ever been down there?

I haven't been there but we have friends that go down a few times a year and I can ask them. I do know that it is one lane driving but I don't think you have to worry about a rush hour traffic since everyone is pretty much going there for vacation too. :)

The ride from Miami usually takes 2 - 2 1/2 hrs to Key West. Sometimes there will be 2 lanes. Watch your speed...if you're going 80 you WILL get a ticket. You won't hit heavy traffid in the morning or early afternoon. On your way down if you're hungry before getting to Key West you should stop at Isla Marrada (mile marker 88.2 or 83.2), on the southbound side at a place called the World Wide Sportsman complex, in there is the Isla Mirrada Fish Company, excellent food, great atmosphere. Walking up and down Duval in Key West you'll find pleanty of places to eat. Bagatelle's is a good place to eat dinner at. The Conch Republic is good for drinks and sandwitches for lunch.

Actually Bounce, it's been quite a few years since I've been and we stayed in a condo and had tons of food. But, I think like Mrs. P said, most of the best dining choices and night life are definately going to be in Key West, since that is the most touristy Island. It's a cool place for a great escape! The drive down was very relaxing. I think if you guys want to make the most of your day trip, you should definately leave at the crack of dawn!! ;)Originally posted by THE BOUNCER
