Coming from a rugby angle, my opinion is that there should be less protective equipment, not more. The more protective equipment there is, the more people use their bodies as battering rams. Instead of making the helmets even more massive and space-age, outlaw tackling with the helmet and watch the head injuries decline. In rugby you tackle with your shoulder, not your head, because you can't afford to. I think football is heading down the wrong path.

Not that it will ever happen because it is part of the excitement for nfl fans, but you bring up a perspective that I've never thought about. Good points.
