  • The Birds and Bees talk

Do you remember having that talk with your parents? Or did they even do it?

    I remember mine.
I was in the 7th grade. My mom came home from work early one day and walked in on me going down on my girl friend. After she went home my mom took my out to Denny’s for ice cream. I new what was coming. She said, “We need to talk about sex.” I look at her and said, “OK mom, what do you need to know?” She just laughed and said, “Smart ass. I guess I’m too late.”

I dread having to have that talk with my daughter. I’ll let her mother or my wife do it.
Luckily she’s only 6 so I have a while before that ever comes up.

My mom never gave me the talk. Instead she gave me a set of 4 books called The Life Cycle Encyclopedia. They were graduated in age appropriate sections and very scientific at first (it gives good anatomy lessons). Although the books were written in the 50's, most of what's in them is still good info. and my daughter will be reading them next. The last book gets into more serious relationship discussions that lead into marriage. I also bought her a more modern book that she'll get in another couple of years which discusses everything from sexual preferences to AIDS.

I never had the talk. I have a brother who is 6 years older than I, and he told me everything long before my parents would have even thought about telling me.

I also had an older brother. He was only 2 years older but we were real close since we grew up the mostly on different military bases. So when we went to live with my Mom when I was 12 and he was 14 I still hung out with him. Needless to say I always hung around the older crowd and because so does everyone else so I had very high range of friends who I learned most everything from.

my mom talked to me all the time and we were so close that the day after I lost my virginity I told her because I had to share that with her. I hope that I can have that same relationship with my daughter. It was nice to be able to talk to my mom and she didn't think badly of me and I always knew that.
