  • Voyager 1 about to leave the solar system

Pretty amazing! I still remember the first outer planet pictures from Voyager when I was a kid.

I have been watching cosmos again for the hundredth time and when that show was made 1979-1980 he was talking about how it had just left earth. amazing. if only it had a high def video cam to beem back live video. i would watch all day even though it would mostly be blackness. lol.

whats crazy is, even though it has been traveling far faster then the fastest bullet for around 40 years it is only about 16 light hours away. that to me is insane. it really isnt very far from us at all in the scale of the universe. if only we could figure out how to get close to light speed travel.

I'm asking, I don't keep up with the space programs....LOL I'm trying to figure shit out here on earth!!

Billions of dollars for a telescope to take pictures of shit so far away we can't do anything with it. Like, who care if Mars is made outta water???

Frank, I'll take your question at face value.

First of all, the emotional and philosophical aspect of space exploration is in itself worth the cost. Humans were meant to explore - it is in our genes and space is merely the next step in our explorations - out of Africa, settling all the continents, etc.

But let's set aside that stuff for a minute. Even from just a purely economic angle, the simple answer is unequivocally YES. Every dollar invested in the space program is returned many-fold. The current estimate is $8 of return for every dollar spent.

Here is a link that is worth reading. It is a bit long but worth it.

By the way, NASA's budget is 0.5% of the federal budget. Yes, 0.5%!!!

                NASA budget in 2011: $18Billion

                Pentagon budget: More than $700Billion

Are you asking or are you making stupid fucking statements? If asking for diet advice do you first insult eating clean?

The push to understand everything from the origins of the universe right down to faster and more efficient forms of travel. If we stop searching and stop trying to learn the wtf are we doing? The earth will be gone in about a billion years as our sun expands and our galaxy crashes with adromada galaxy. If the human race is to survive we must leave this planet and push on to other stars.

How did I make a stupid statement?? I clearly stated that I don't keep up with what NASA is doing. From my perspective I don't see how looking at stars and things out in the universe does anything for us. But I'm in the middle of reading Scrum's article. So I see the expense isn't as bad as I first thought. I'll finish the article.

Quit being so fucking sensitive!! :)

Humans are literally the universe made conscious. Any human that doesn't care about his or hers own origins or place in the cosmos should be fucken shot!

Saying shit like who cares if mars has water or not and saying Hubble is not worth it because it only sees things far away.
