LOL that this comes from a now shutdown US accelerator and not the multi billion dollar CERN in Europe. :weights:

      Tomorrow is the big day.

The LHC teams are expected to present something. Lots of speculation that there is going to be definitive statement about the Higgs being found.

      Meeting is in Melbourne, Aus.

Redback, can you give us real time updates bro?

scrum can you put into normal words what it means if they have found the particle.

the way i understand it is, its what gives mass to matter. in other words its why anything weighs something? Is that correct?

I am not a particle physicist but here is a layman's description as I understand it.

The Standard Model of Particle Physics, which is a highly successful theory that describes all matter in the universe, indicates that there is something called the Higgs field that permeates all of space. Interaction with the Higgs field is what gives other particles mass. The more the interaction, the higher the mass.

Think of the Higgs field as something like gravity or electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field is transmitted through particles called photons. Light is an electromagnetic wave, as are X-rays, microwaves, radio signals, cellular phone signals, etc. All are communicated through photons of different energies. In the same way, gravity is theorized to be communicated through particles called gravitons. They have been predicted but not detected yet.

In the case of the Higgs field, the interaction of the Higgs field with the other particles is theorized to be facilitated by this particle called the Higgs Boson, much like photons and gravitons facilitate electromagnetism and gravity.

The standard model predicts a lot of properties of the Higgs boson but not its mass. It is however pretty massive, so it takes a lot of energy to find it. That's why you need a large accelerator like the LHC to generate the kinds of energies that could enable detection of the Higgs boson.

It it is found, it will be a huge triumph for the Standard Model. If it is definitely shown to not exist, that's a huge result as well. It will mean that they standard model will need to be revised, but there are theories that don't need the Higgs boson to exist, so perhaps those interpretations would gain favor.

Please just shut the fuck you fucken mental midget.

Understanding our universe is what we need and should always push for.

Everything that modern society has come to consider to epitomize human civlilization - computers, metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, electricity, the ability to manipulate natural objects and forces for human good, all derive from our understanding of how the natural world works.

If we don't have curiosity about how the world works, we might as well be chimpanzees in the African forest.

Yes but we already have all those things, how might this improve matters?

Where would you way of thinking fit in right before major discoveries of the world? Would you have been against Columbus sailing? How about the space program? Would you have preferred we never advance or push to learn at all?

We wouldn't have had anything with your way of thinking. Hell, you would have told the guy that came up with the wheel not to bother.

No I can see logic in all of those, I guess I just thought from your reaction that something known to be useful had been discovered but I suppose then its like another form of flower has ben discovered then our something, interesting but no known benefits other than its new

A great day for science! I hope Peter Higgs gets his Nobel this year.
