American audiences are largely ignorant the chronology of WW2. While not disputing the massive contribution the U.S. gave to overall success i would dispute that they saved Britain from occupation.Originally posted by THE BOUNCER View PostBritain would have fallen to German air power if not for the help of americans.
WW2 began in 1939 when Britain declared war on Hitler after his invasion of Poland.
May 1940: At Dunkirk the Br Expeditionary Force is cut of from the French army and forced to retreat
Spring of 1940: Operation Barbarossa - Germany invades Russia
Summer and Autumn of 1940: The Battle of Britain - The RAF stops Germany gaining air superiority (the condition necessary for Operation Sealion - the invasion of Britain) and Hitler fails to force surrender through civilian losses. (the blitz)
December 11 1941: Hitler Declares War on the United States
August 21, 1942 to February 2, 1943 Stalingrad - Russian victory begins the advance that would not stop until they had reached Berlin.
El Alamein (October 23 – November 4, 1942) - British and commonwealth victory in North Africa. The last major battle in the war that was exclusively a Commonwealth affair. American forces would contribute to the D-Day and Italian invasions.
D-Day June 1944 – A combined force of American, British and Commonwealth soldiers invade Normandy. Beaches (in order west to east) = Utah (American), Omaha (American) Gold (British) Juno (Canadian) Sword (British)
Other interesting facts -
The Breaking of the Enigma code was almost purely the result of British and Polish code breakers (it was British personnel from HMS Bulldog who first captured a naval Enigma machine, from U-110 in the North Atlantic May 1941 not the Americans as U-571 would have us believe)
Norwegian and British Special Operations Executive (SOE) efforts ensured that Germanies advance to atomic weoponry was massively disrupted.
North America certainly contributed much through the Lend-Lease Act of 11 March 1941 to the allied powers in return for cash and territorial payments. Nevertheless, after the battle of Britain the invasion of Britain was no longer a possibility for Hitler’s Germany which even after d-day was committing each month an average of only 64 divisions to the western front compared to 138 in the east.
Certainly, had the U.S. not entered the war the world would be a different place (and the Cold war Russia would have been a much scarier beast, having occupied practically the whole of Europe) but i dont think the evidence suggests Britain would have ever been successfully occupied by Germany had it not been for American support.

Unsurprisingly my bubble gum friend I see it different,
from left to right; Soviet brute ignorance, American lost commercial puppet, British experienced brain power.
Churchill was a hard bastard no doubt about it and he'd seen action in the Boer War in South Africa, he knew the respecting might and bargaining powers and played it like a true strategist and made deals that saved lives.
