Apple's strong suit is product design. There's no question that they take human factors engineering more seriously and execute it better than anyone else. The user experience is seamless, no doubt about it.

I work in an electronics research lab. I once heard a story about apple product design. Apparently, the whole design of the Macbook was based on the various cable ports. They start with locating the cable ports in the "right" place so that everything is laid out ergonomically and perfectly. Everything perfectly located and centered, not too high or low, not too far back or somewhere nonintuitive. THEN, the build the rest of the laptop up. Everything inside has to fit the outside, not the other way around with many companies where they figure out what they want under the hood and then kluge together the outside shell. Got the give the devil his due on this one.

But that being said, people drink the apple kool-aid and think that they are the most innovative coolest company on earth, whereas everyone who knows anything about computers will realize that Apple is adept at packaging a second-rate technology and selling it at state of the art, and they are really god at it.
