Takes less speed to break the sound barrier at higher altitudes. You have more forces working against you at sea level which requires greater speed to overcome them.

i get the forces working against you closer to sea level but why is the speed of sound different? i can understand it being harder to get to the speed of sound at sea level but should it not be the same fucking speed regardless even though its harder to get to.
