Explain how they got screwed? All I know is that their economy is seriously tanking, and they cannot afford to keep up all the free programs that their citizens expect.

They got screwed, europe instructed them that in order to be eligible for a financial bail out and remain in europe community per se, thus giving them a better future or so they were told, they must agree to austerity measures ie cost cutting. So they bought it, europe game them the conditional fonancial guarantees (theoretical backing so other countries that trade with them's can have confidence they are able to pay their bills) then they make the required cuts; subsidies to mines stopped etc etc, now the country is double fucked: 1) most are out of work, 2) countries don't buy the europe backing and consider greece risky to trade with, independent credit rating has actually fallen further.

They would have been better saying to hell with europe we're leaving that shitty community
