He was a fantastic boxer. Hand speed was ridiculous. I can't stand him for entirely different reasons :)

probably for the same reasons i love him. said what was on his mind and wasn't afraid of what people thought. and fuck the Vietnam war, i wouldn't have went either. go over to some pointless war because some old rich men in Washington tell me to? fuck outta here.

Lol,can't have it both ways bro. You just play into that "give me" entitlement bullshit that has been procreating for the last 30 years. Retrospect is a great tool, and you can Monday morning quarter back shit all day long, should have done this, no way we are doing that, but looking at in from a present day context, in my mind, no excuse. He did however speak his mind. Dig that about him..and his showmanship was awesome. But thats all.

Well it wasn't directed toward you, but Bouncers response to my initial post. I would imagine he understood the context and content just fine in regards to his commentary.

i dont really see how you come to that conclusion. Vietnam was a bullshit war then and a bullshit war now. i needlessly killed our soldiers and many innocent civilians. it was in no shape or form a situation like WW2 where we NEEDED to be involved.

Depends from your perspective I suppose. At the time, communism was considered to be a major threat--The Cold War was in full effect. Peoples view at the time was that communism threatened the entire world. The United States was supporting South Vietnam, a democratic ally at the time. It was viewed as a way to contain communism and America was still feeling its oats from WWII. Korea was much the same conflict..actually it is still an ongoing conflict technically as all that was negotiated was a cease fire.

As I said, you can look back and pick apart Vietnam and its logic all you want. I honestly can't say I would disagree from many points. But Vietnam itself at the time wasn't a conflict that was protested against initially. After our involvement drug on for over 15 years opposition changed as the politics and mentality of America changed..the hippies! And it escalated during the 60's.

My contention with Ali's story is that he was a conscientious objector for religious reasons which, in my opinion is bullshit. And again its perspective..58,000 men answered the call. This guy used his fame to bail to Canada...and thats fine. But don't come back when the fighting's over...it cost him dearly I will admit, and from his accounts more than he initially thought it would. But all of that doesn't take away from him being the greatest heavyweight champion ever imo.
