  • Soldier says she faced harassment over Muslim name

I have never served in the armed forces, but this is just juvenile and ridiculous. To me, working in the armed forces should entitle you to the same kind of professionalism that one should expect working in a bank or any other corporate job. Just as I go to work every day and not worry about whether the researchers working for me is white or black, married or divorced, Muslim or Jewish, straight or gay, all I care about is whether they can deliver the goods in the lab. Just like that, I would expect that all I care about is whether my fellow solider can shoot a rifle straight and whether they can be counted on to cover my six and carry me out of the firefight if necessary. Do your job, don't worry about the other person's ethnicity, religion, and other personal stuff, and go home at the end of the day. Why do people not get this?

And the comments at the end of the article? Wow! Just because she is a paratrooper staff sergeant, she should have thicker skin and is not entitled to basic levels of professionalism? I don't care if I am a freaking Delta Force operator, I would expect that the Army would create a work environment that would protect me from ridiculous shit like this! BLM, Ripper, you guys who have served, what do you think?

Soldier says she faced harassment over Muslim name

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sgt. 1st Class Naida Hosan is not a Muslim — she's a Catholic. But her name sounded Islamic to fellow U.S. soldiers in Iraq, and they would taunt her, calling her "Sgt. Hussein" and asking what God she prayed to.

So before deploying to Afghanistan last year for her second war tour, she legally changed her name — to Nadia Christian Nova.

This did not solve her problems.

Instead, matters escalated. Nova complained to her superiors about constant anti-Muslim slurs and jokes. She says they responded with a series of reprisals intended to drive her out of the Army, leading her to consider suicide.

I bet she's really pretty without that uniform:hibb:

Why her parents would given her a name like that being Catholic is beyond me. Because that name is so right down that alley of Muslim names. But being poked at because of it, very wrong for sure.

I read it. A couple of things...one--the military is no place to take getting flipped shit significantly seriously...and considered suicide? Really? Not trying to be callous but harden the fuck up. We are breeding a generation of over sensitive, boo hoo, whining crybabies, where when things get tough we eat pills or throw ourselves off buildings--posting on facebook beforehand so everyone can screech about the horrible cry for help, and how tragic it is. I'm not saying that SOME circumstances aren't tragic...

Generations before us fought in World War II, Vietnam, endured the cold war, energy crisis, fear of nuclear war and communism...and didn't whimper about how unfair and horrible the world was for not giving them a hug and a tootsie roll. they manned the fuck up and built things..Great big awesome, show stopping things that the world was in awe of. We were the absolute industrial machine of the planet...Men drank beer, barbequed, played baseball with their kids..in essence we kicked ass...not, watched Dr. Phil, a show about people who hoard shit, and create Windows 8.

As my own example my grandfather fought from the beaches of Normandy to Berlin..I shit you not, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne, all the way through Europe. And I never found out until after he was dead how significant his service was. Why? He never mentioned it..and Because that previous generations were men that had to do tough things, and they went out and did them, came home, had babies and raised families, and became kick ass grandpas. They didn't bemoan the cards they had been dealt..they fueled the industrial revolution and built the greatest nation on the planet. (I understand some opinions will vary on that point-historically its true ;)..)

Now, we have a hyper sensitivity to evvvvvverything--and this inverted sensibility that we should eat a mile of shit to kiss Islam's ass needs to stop. When Islamic extremists stop trying to blow people up and raise hell on a a planetwide scale then people will quit eye fucking it....as for this soldier-- You're in a war zone in the MIDDLE EAST. You have a name that can be construed to be Arabic in nature---annnnnnd you're a Farsi linguist, and in the 82nd Airborne...you're going to get some shit. Roll with it...and hell ya change your name if you feel the need and asked to be stationed in fucking Alaska..the military is a huge place. They manage to move personnel around all the time from the moon to Antarctica, I am sure you could find somewhere on the planet where your feel bads weren't crushed.

I have a hard time finding empathy with things like this, because its a continual expectation in our society now in lieu of actually taking care of your own shit, being responsible for yourself and your actions, and realizing that the world doesn't owe you shit, the government shouldn't hold your hand, and you dictate the kind of life you live, not let others dictate if for you, that every time you get your feelings hurt or something bad happens..the entire populace should snap too and correct the problem.

I don't disagree with some of the stuff you are saying, but the whole name calling thing seems like juvenile junior-high stuff. How old are these people again? This didn't seem like camaraderie and good natured ribbing, this seemed to be harassment outright. Are these the childish antics we should expect from the people we give guns to so that they can protect us and represent us abroad? :disagree:

Sorry scrum but the reality is that the army recruit dumbos and gumbos as cannon fodder and the odd special case for marketing purposes. Just look at the impoverished no hope areas they target recruitment drives, says alot.

So there's a job, during yraining your basically abused, made to feel like nothing avd worked to within an inch of.your life. If you pass you get the luxury of being shot at, blown up or perhaps sent to bomb innocents.

Show of hands for those intelligent, conciencious, sensitive peeps interested?

That is one of the sad facts of military demographics, I think.

Nathaniel Fick, the exceptional Marine 1st Lt. from Generaiton Kill, has spoken (look up Nate Fick on youtube) and written extensively on how he disagrees with "liberal" campuses like Berkeley and some Ivy League schools who bar military recruiters form their campus. Fick opines that this hurts the diversity of the army which is a very bad thing eventually. By self-selecting certain demographics (southern republican, right wing officers and disadvantaged minorities and southern whites), the army is ultimately the poorer for it as it moves further away from the demographics of the general public in the country. I highly recommend listening to Fick speak on his Youtube videos.
