Bouncer, did you watch Wildest Africa? It was really good. Looks like they have a bunch of others in the "Wildest" series. Watching Wildest Middle East right now. I think they also have Wildest IndoChina, etc.

Nah, I havent bro. Nature shows/docs don't interest me as much as historical docs. Iv'e seen all the big BBC ones like planet earth and frozen planet. I'm not sure it's possible to top those.

Fantastic series. Netflix has been getting some really good stuff lately in the documentary side. My younger son will watch wildlife documentaries all day if we let him.

                  Departures.

                  departures - about the show

I've been watching a lot of episodes of this lately... two Canadian guys traveling the world, visiting various places. Great series - there's something about it that's really appealing. The guys joke around and
the show is light hearted, but invariably there are these surprisingly sensitive and poignant moments, mainly in their interactions with the natives.

Life - by same people that did Planet Earth.

DMT The Spirit Molecule - talks about a drug that's found in the human brain and in nature that has profound effects on the human conscience.

Bouncer, since you've crossed the big mountains and are one of us now, you should watch "The West" by Ken Burns. Needless to say, it is fantastic. I saw it again last week. A lot of my empathy for the Native Americans comes from watching shows like this and reading books on the subject. The settling of the West is an epic story that is endlessly romanticized in our books and our movies, but this series puts it in perspective by also talking about the tragedy this eventually meant for the natives and their way of life, about how treaties and promises were repeatedly broken and the Indians systematically dispossessed. It is something every American should watch.

Good call, I saw it years ago but I really don't remember the details, only the basics. I'll add it to my favorite list.

I'm currently watching a series called American Genius. Its about the great battles between guys like Jobs and Gates, wright brothers and Curtiss, Hearst and Pulitzer, Edison and Tesla etc...

The whole series can be found on tvonline.tw just make sure you have adblock installed on your browser before streaming a video and it works flawless.

Watching The West now. Thought I'd seen it years ago but I don't remember any of it. Excited about this one. Love Ken Burns.

FYI scrum. They have remastered his civil war series and it will be shown on PBS this month. If you haven't seen it scrum your really missing something special. Even if the subject matter doesn't appeal to you, please watch it, you will love it and be glad you watched it by the end. Made me see this country in a completely different way. Shelby Foote is my favorite southerner of all time. Guy is amazing in his knowledge and tells a story like no other.

Yep, I have watched the original version. Awesome series - what a goddamn waste though. A war that should never have been fought.

I started watching this documentary on Virunga National Park in Congo yesterday. Amazing story about how the rangers there risk their lives every day to protect the last mountain gorillas that live in the mountains of Virunga.

They had these scenes there about some orphan gorillas that the rangers rescued from poachers and are rehabilitating. The way these young gorillas would put their arms around the neck of the rangers and embrace them, I don't think anyone can see that and not get a lump in their throat. It was so human- like. How poachers could possibly kill these creatures, I have no idea. I am not a violent person, but I swear, after watching that, I would not bat an eyelid if the poachers were slowly and painfully pit to death.

Now that one I have seen! Those men that protect them with such limited funds.. Amazing.

By the way, about Ken Burns. There was one series he did that I could not finish out of boredom. His series on Prohibition. His weakest series IMO.
