Also didn't like how they spent so much time with local outsiders who remembers the neighborhood and how it was but weren't involved. Basically you have to listen to people who don't know any real details talk about how they aren't afraid of whitey and how they'd kill him blah blah. I want facts and details, not a local northern urban hick running his mouth the whole time the camera is on him.

      Mile... Mile & a Half

A group leaves their daily lives to hike California's John Muir Trail, the 219 mile stretch from Yosemite to Mount Whitney.

      _________

I'm seriously considering doing something like this considering how close I am to all these amazing National Parks out here. Nothing gives me peace like nature does. I am a completely different person when I am out with my dogs on the trails and the woods. It's like a drug to me and my tension just melts away. Obviously I would start out by doing bits and pieces of the trail first but it seems like an interesting challenge and something I've never even considered until watching the documentary.

Gotta start doing sections of it to get a taste for it. Definitely don't want to be one of those who goes into it all excited and quits by the 25th mile.

Bro, I hear what you are saying, but you can't jump into the JM or PCT. Do day hikes first - 4 miles in and 4 miles out with a sack lunch. There should be plenty of day hikes around where you are. Then do an overnighter or two. Through hikes are serious stuff. You've got to carry all your food, etc. for multiple days. It's a like climbing Everest - should try your local 10,000 footer first.

That's exactly what I'm saying bro. I have no illusions about jumping right in and doing it tomorrow.

Would love to do that shit. Carry a small pop tent and bare necessities and make it happen. Hike 20 miles then set up shop for the night with a fire and eat and chill...i'm not a hiker, but love the wilderness. As you already know, thats my thing...my vacations are spent in remote canada. How many miles could u do per day you think? 20 at least i'd imagine as long as it wasnt terrible rough terraine

All I know is I average 5 miles at the park I take my dogs to in 100 degree heat. We can do that in about 3 hours. That includes stops at the water. So that's kind of a leisurely walk. I do that about 3 times per week. The park we go to is not flat either. All kinds of hills and shit. So if I really train for it or something I think I'm in better shape that the average turd. Then again I don't walk around with 65lbs of gear on my back. But... Then I don't think it gets up to 100 in the mountains so I have an advantage walking in that kinda heat maybe.

Yeah id say 20 miles per day would be possible then. Somedays maybe more. If you were seriously goal oriented and in the kind of shape we are...then i dont see why you couldnt do the trek in 10 days. If i had money, id come out to Cali and do it with u bro :thumb:

                    • In the doc it takes them 4 weeks so I'm not sure. They don't seem to be in the best shape. One fat guy quits about day 5 I think.

                      • Let me add, I don't think I would want to rush it even if I have the physical ability to do it. For me it would be about peace, the silence, nature, the fresh air, the beautiful scenery etc.. It calms me just thinking about it.

                        • Just finished it. Yea there's no way your doing that trail in 10 days unless your some elite woodsman and your just rushing through it as fast as you can. Matt your just thinking about the miles but your forgetting about the terrain. There is some rough trails, steep climbs, river crossings etc..

I'd rather take it all in over a longer period. Most of the camp stops have a lake so you even get to take a bath!

                          • Set yourself a goal of doing the JM or at least part of it within say the next 2 years. It's doable - I agree with you that you want to do it in a leisurely way, not with a set and aggressive schedule. That's defeats the whole point.

                            • Yea I was thinking of doing different day long sections of it over a period of a few years to get a taste of what's in store for the whole thing.

                              • And in the documentary they ran into people who were doing a 5 day part of the trail and I think also an 8 day. I'd probably start with day hikes, then try something like a weekend hike, and slowly build from there.
