Carlin also exemplifies the fundamental problem facing US rugby. He started playing rugby LAST YEAR!!! We just don't have guys who have played the game since they were toddlers and who instinctively know what to do. Yes, we have strong fit guys and yes, we have racehorses on the wings, but all are guys who couldn't make it as football or track stars and picked up rugby essentially after their college careers were over. That will get you to a respectable evel internationally but to start competing with the rugby powerhouses, we need guys who have rugby minds and that is not something that can be developed in a year or two.
