  • Been a long time!

I haven't posted anything, nor have I visited this site too often, in about 7 years. I see lots of new faces/names and lots of old faces/names...not so much. There are some wonderful changes to the site itself. Hats off to "The Bouncer" for staying "state of the art" with the web design. I simply have had many life changes in the past 7 years that has restricted my time so I couldn't visit as much as I would have liked to, but, hopefully I will be able to visit and post more often as time permits. I have still stayed in good shape and work out regularly, except for the pec tear I had about this time last year which slowed me waaay down! Trust me, you NEVER want any of that! I had 2 rotator cuff surgeries in 1999 and 2002 and this was FAR WORSE! Anyway, good luck to all who are trying very hard to improve yourselves and hopefully we'll exchange posts as time goes by. Believe it or not I was still doing warmups. As old as I am I usually start out with about 15 minutes of stretching, then the bar alone for 40-50 reps, 135 for 20, 155 for 20, 185 for 15, 205 for 10, 225 for ten, 245 for 8, 275 for 6-8, 300 for 2, then 315 for 1 or 2. I don't go any higher because I work out in my home gym and usually don't have a spot so I don't want to risk anything. I can do more though. Anyway, I was at my 6th. rep at 225 and then all hell broke loose, or rather my pec tendon tore..COMPLETELY. 225 geez! Fortunately, I had my next door neighbor's 20 year old son who had started out working out with me 2 weeks earlier and he helped get the bar off me. Otherwise that might have been the end of me because I don't think I could have gotten the weight off me. Just glad I wasn't at 315 or higher because I don't think he could have got it off me. I did a lot of research and found that some people had torn their pec by just doing push ups! The pec tendon that attaches the muscle to the humerus, (upper arm bone) is a relative small tendon in all people compared to the large muscle that it has to work with. I attribute my tear to age, connective tissue, as you age, is not as supple and becomes a bit brittle, thus far less effective handling heavy loads. I normally used an ultra wide grip, thumbs just outside the last ring on an Olympic style bar. After the tear, I have moved my grip in about quite a bit. More work for the triceps, but less strain on the pec tendon.

I am 47 and one thing I have realized is that my days of doing 1-2 rep maxes are done. As we get older and less elastic, the potential for injury is too great. Not that this is what happened in your case, but in general, I think backing off to lower weight/increased rep regime is the way to go.

FITNESSBRAT. Would have answered you sooner but I think the site had some issues earlier and I couldn't login. YUP, he is indeed married now, had his wedding in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic in 2009. A dump of a country but the 5 star all incusive resort we stayed out was great! He has since lived in Ohio and is now in San Antonio, still married to the "Doctor." Yeah a real doctor who is an infertility specialist in a new clinic they moved there for her to do her baby thing. Plus, they/he has new twin girls, Tatum and Jacee, born June 21, 2012. Thankfully they are all doing well.

BOUNCER. Same old same old. Have spent the last 3 months catching up on all the yard/house stuff I couldn't do last late summer and fall/winter because of my pec tear. I hope all is well with you and as I mentioned the new look of Superior Muscle is indeed awesome! BTW, I sent you a PM several days ago. I figured you've just been too busy to get to it. When you get a chance, check it out.
