  • Ripper, FB - I'm going to be out on a boat tomorrow!

So my 8 yo son who is an avid birder wanted to go on a pelagic birding trip. We will head out of Newport OR tomorrow morning on a boat to about 30 miles off shore to look at sea birds that congregate in large numbers off the Oregon coast.

It's the first time I'm going to be on a boat out of sight of land! Hope I don't get seasick! :panic: :panic:

Take some preemptive motion sickness meds. Better to take it and not need it then not take it and be sick as hell on the boat. IMHO;)

Don't think too much about it, or you'll freak yourself out right into being sick, lol. Keep your head up, eyes out!

The only thing that a large group of birds means to us....is tuna! :P

        Have a good time! :)

Thanks! Hope it doesn't rain. Forecast is ok and I hope the sea is calm. We just had a storm come through yesterday and we should get a lull for a few days before the next one rolls in off the Pacific.

In the meantime, I've been watching these sorts of videos on Youtube to get psyched up.. j/k..

Haha. I'm guessing that's a fairly large vessel, but it still took a good amount of water over the bow on the wave at the end!

Had a blast, saw many birds, saw orca (first time in Oregon for even the guides) and a grey whale, saw harbor seals, porpoises and as a finale, 4 dolphins surfed on our bow wave for over10 minutes.

Outgoing was in a 4 foot incoming swell which is probably nothing to you guys, but it was enough to make me totally sick. Ended up tossing my breakfast over the starboard gunwale and felt much better after that. Coming back, we had following seas and the captain rode the swells and it was smooth as silk.

All in all, an excellent day! ::thumup:

Oh no. 4 foot is no smooth ride! I'm glad you guys had such a good time and got to see so much. It stinks to go out and see nothing, catch nothing

                      Pics? :)
