  • Hunting - scope question

    Maybe Lip, Rocket or anyone else that is into firearms can help. I’m hoping to find a decent scope for $300 or under for my 30-06 rifle. It will be used primarily for whitetail and I usually take shots from 300 yards or under. I started doing some research and the Vortex Crossfire II gets great reviews and is guaranteed for a lifetime no matter what the issue is or how it happened. It sounds like their customer service is the best in the business but I have never used their products before. Any help is appreciated!

    Id go for Bushnell Elite range, say 3-9x. 300 yards is a fair distance for that game and clearly you'll be stalking but you dont want anything more complicated than that, and while such a scope will offer good range of adjustment for bullet drop, without knowing your load weight it shouldnt be too bad from a 306 ar that range.

        Chadd, I have a pair of Vortex Binos..they are awesome!!They are the 10x42 model. PERFECT for deer hog turkey n duck hunting. Not so small ya have to work to use them but just big enough to be compact...yet not bulky. Lens are very clear and have good light gathering ability in low light situations I really love um dude..very well built!! Ive put them thru hell and never had an issue with them. made here In USA and as you know Lifetime replacement. I don't have any of their scopes but a few of my buds do and all swear by them. When I need to purchase another scope Im going to get one of theirs with out question.

        For what your going to do def go with a 3x9 power. The bigger the objective lens you can handle on your rifle the better. I would try and get a 3x9x50 mm if it'll fit. I would not go anything under a 40 mm objective lens. Good luck with what ever ya decide to go with.

          The elite series looks to be over the $300 price range and I think I want to go higher than a 3-9x. I read mixed reviews about the Bushnell Elite series. Mostly good but maybe 1/4 of the reviews being negative.

            Lip, what would be your preference between the two choices: 4-12X50 or 6-18x 44mm?

            The more reviews I read on the crossfire the more I like it. Can't beat it for the price. Their high end scope with v-brite option is $270. Not bad at all.

              Cool, just beware a couple things;

              1) the interaction of zoom with crosshair steadyness, bullet drop compensation, and speed of getting set
              2) in terms of brightness, its a trade off, to get more brightness in your gonna need more diameter lens so means more weight to haul. Yeah I know some lenses are a lil better than others but broadly thats the principle. I wouldn't get yk caught up on this, you want a weapon that is effective and accurate and usable not to outdo your mates with technical stuff. Don't be that guy

                Chad... I want to keep power on a scope as low as I can get it.....Situation... if a deer pops up at 20 yds and all you have is a 6x you can have trouble getting him in the scope quickly. If I had to choose from them two I would go with the 4x12x50mm. I always keep my scopes on the lowest power setting I have when hunting. If the shot looks long i give the scope a crank. Ive made several shots thru timber at 200 yds and dont recall ever going over 6x on my scopes. But thats me. I cant see in over 40 years of hunting where a 6x18 power scope would be pratical in any whitetail hunting situation. again..just my opnion

                to be honest in hunting a lot of states for white tail ..I would guess the average shot at whitetails in my experiances is generally within the 100 yd range, unless you get out west alot..that would be different then.

                  Don't think I'm trying to be "that guy" when I'm looking to spend under $300.

                  I thought you were anti-guns? What are you doing in this thread? lol

                    I do agree with you and it also drops the price of the scope too. My dad has talked about going out west hunting someday. Even so a 4-12 scope should be fine. Thanks for the help bro.

                      yep,, 4x12 would be more then capabable for any hunting situation anywhere.

                          Just shot two deer over the weekend. 2 bangs back to back - 2 dead deer piercing the heart on both shots. Been around guns and hunting my whole life bro. Next time you come visit our beautiful country stop by with your bb gun and we can have a little shooting comp. ;)

                          You still own any guns?
