Anything with an ip address or connected to a device with an ip address can be accessed remotely if a capable person or organization chose to do so. There is no hiding once you're plugged in.
Cable companies are asking you to do this voluntarily in the future. They want to install cable boxes with web cams that monitor your habits while watching tv in order to customize a customer commercial profile. You have dogs or kids running around, they stream commercials targeted towards dogs and kids, etc. -

Old news. I don't have a need for a webcam, opted for an extra wifi antenna on my laptop last year, instead of a camera. My reception is excellent.Comment
