winter retail sales advice - tv suround sound

So all things considered my living room isnt very wide and im slowly trying to declutter and replace.

In terms of sound system I remember you guys saying don't gi overboard for my purposes also.

So ive actually started looking at those single long bar frontal speakers that comprise a single lateral bar that lies in front of the TV. By bro in law has one and swears by it.

Anyways here's my question. Some are 40watt and others more expensive but throw out like 120 watt.
How much do I need?

The only way I would say those low cost soundbars sound decent is compared to the built in flat screen speakers ( which are the first things sacrificed to achieve the ultra thin size).

I've never had anything in addittion to the tv.

Point being, they do not produce good sound. Comparing them to the built in speakers is a poor reference point.
