Sounds like he missed the apex and simply didn't have enough down force to hold him into the corner. Should have downshifted instead of just relying on brakes.

Almost expected in a sense. The guy lived to race. Once he realized it was over after his failed comeback its like nothing else could possibly give him that high of being the best.
