Lol, the tangents in this thread are awesome:) For me, and I have said it again and again, if you begin to chip away at the the Constitution then where do you stop. The 2nd Amendment, the 1st Amendment, hell even the 10th Amendment, these are all fundamental building blocks of what America is built on. The Amendments provide the foundation that even lets us prattle on the internet like we do. Try doing this in some of the countries I have lived in and the site would be shut down and your doorbell would ring.
And for me that's what this debate is about. People will always find ways to do violence to each other..even on a mass scale no matter what you regulate-use knives, gas, bombs whatever..unless you regulate the people themselves and then you have a civil war eventually. I have debated, lectured, and taught on this topic for a number of years...and I can tell you from my experience the people that are so quick to allow the government to regulate our Constitution are people who would be vastly unaffected by that regulation...citizens here who don't really have much knowledge or skill set or maybe even need for firearms--to them its seems like an easy fix..even when the VAST majority of independent statistical data shows that it wouldn't be. Foreigners, and especially members of the Commonwealth have nothing to even quantify the freedoms that we have in the United States because their baseline is so much more different...it is power already ceded to the government--why shouldn't everyone do it they think.
For me it is simply about being a Constitutional Republic (Constitutional republic - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) the 10th Amendment, the right to be free men and women. If I have done nothing wrong, then why should someone be able to limit my actions or what I want to do simply because they say? That was never the intent of our government..in fact it was quite the opposite. I firmly believe in big boy rules...You are responsible for yourself to follow the key rules that society has set--leave other people alone that don't want to be bugged, don't take other people's shit, and take care of your own business. Somewhere along the line Americans came up with the idea that government should run us instead of us running it.

If anyone thinks that the US constitution has any resemblence to the intended original version, you are sadly deluded. Further, this fixation/egotistical obsession with the right to bear arms has blinded and side tracked you from the real fundamental building blocks which have been quietly savaged while your head was turned.
Your government has thrown up several, what are known as aunt sallys, I.e. diversions, gun laws is one.
Sadly some are still fixated, its futile, YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE THEM IN THEIR CURRENT FORM, NO IFS, NO BUTS, THEY ARE GOING AND YOU ARE POWERLESS NOW. Because so many of your other rights have been whittled down.
Sorry, the truth hurts sometimes

Gun laws are now a diversion? I'm genuinely trying to follow, but it doesn't make sense.Originally posted by Mr incredible View PostIf anyone thinks that the US constitution has any resemblence to the intended original version, you are sadly deluded. You just sound like the kid on the playground that is mad because some kids get to eat candy and you don't. It still baffles me that you are so concerned with the USA. It isn't all roses and ice cream over in the UK. I'm sure you can find a local way to advocate for changes that might actually benefit you. Rather than get pissy about our right to own firearms.

You just perfectly further evidenced the silo insular mentality of a typical American, particularly those from the south, as I have witnessed from much international travel.Originally posted by Turbo3000 View PostGun laws are now a diversion? It is a small world my freind and we are all connected, to underestimate this is fatal for a country.
Oh and I am involved in more localised issues but I cannot elaborate too much.
Finally, yes I am saying that gun law issues have been so effectively distractive that the masses have missed much if the diluting of your constitution in other respects
