How is the W near the lake?

Thinking of flying in early on a Saturday and leaving out late Monday night. What should I absolutely see during my time? Eat?

    Rent car or public/taxi?

Should I put the trip on hold and try to visit next spring and stay for an extra night or two?

This applies to any trip.. Don't rush it. Sounds like that's what your doing. Take your time and plan it.

One absolute must do is the architectural tour. Amazing boat ride through and around the city.

      Navy pear is another must.

Go see the bean, the fountain, the sail boats, and walk the path along the lake.

Must eats... Girl and the goat, graham Elliot's bistro, goosefoot, DMK burger bar, Gino's east...

If it were me and I was planning the trip for ideal weather it would be mid May.

The L train and taxi will get you everywhere you wanna go. No need to rent car if staying in the city.

I don't know anything about the W other then its supposed to be nice.

Don't miss the museums (if you are into museums) - IMO, the Art Institute of Chicago, Field Museum and Museum of Science and Industry are must-see items.. world class.

Also catch a live Chicago blues show... Can't go wrong with Buddy Guy's Place, B.L.U.E.S, Blue Chicago.

            :thankyou:
We have decided to visit next May. A new york Sat-Mon trip works because I have been to NYC a lot, I will need more time in Chicago. Probably be there during this time next year.

............I wanted a weekend trip in August, but I also need a new desktop computer. Decisions......

May is good. Don't come in August... Humidity is brutal. But then again, you're from the boiler room down south, so you may not find it oppressive. :)

Chicago or Cali? Thought about flying into LAX and staying for a couple of nights, then driving? to wine country and doing that for a few days.

Couild I do La, San Fran, wine country in 7 days?

Open to other ideas. Just want to see some new places and eat good meals.

That's a lot to do in 7 days. I think SF + wine country is reasonable for 7days. Or just LA. Not both.

I did sanfran and wine country in 6 days. Wish we had spent more time in wine country. Was a bit disappointed in San Fran. Wine country it heaven on earth.

Chicago is a definite stop on my list if or when I travel to the USA again.

Fly into SFO, spend a day in SF, check out the pier, take a trip to Alcatraz, etc. Then spend 6 days in wine country. Can't think of a better way to unwind, get great food and relax. LAX to SF is a 6-7 hour drive in normal traffic, so combining LA and SF will cost you a day, so pretty hard to pull off on a 7 day trip.

Just to be clear, you need to schedule alcatraz well before you get there. You can't just show up and go. Was a 3 day waiting list when we went.

                              Thanks for the advice.

Do we travel by car through wine country? I have googled a few itineraries, but I like advice from people like you guys.
