Hitler would not have wanted to live with the embarrassment of losing the mother land. he was Germany in his mind. when the war was over so was he. he was not the type that could have gone on enjoying life in South America like so many other Nazi's that escaped did. Hitler believed in his cause through and through. Germany was either going to be expanded or he was going to die trying. he certainly was not going to give anyone the satisfaction of capturing him. he made the decision to have his body burned after death because he was horrified when he saw what happened to his once idol Mussolini. his people hung his naked body in the streets. Hitler apparently had nightmares of that for weeks according to people closest to him.

Also has to be said that Hitler was not the same man at the end of the war that he was at the start. he was a very sick man who needed an insane amount of drugs to function. this mentally and physically weak man would not have lasted with out his massive support structure that he had grown so used to in Berlin.
