This thread is about songs that appeal to me. Prerequisites are great songwriting and storytelling, not to mention delivery. Songs that touch you or make you think.

Neko Case ...Best voice in music, without a doubt. Damn, she is good!

What I want to know is how she is toiling in obscurity while Katy Perry is all over the goddamn place! :fight:

Success is not equivalent to talent. Rap and pop has clarified that.

Something about this song really touched me... the futility and the human aspect of the lyrics or whatever.. great song!

        Beth Hart - LA Song

Lots of people have of course recorded this blues classic, but this Tedeschi/Trucks version was excellent as well!

The Sky is Crying - Susan Tedeschi/Derek Trucks and their band..

            Incomparable - Buddy Guy's version..

Quality cover but more of a lounge version. Not like the body contorting SRV version.

Agreed... SRV's version and the older ones from the masters like Elmore James and Albert King. The Etta James vocal version is fantastic too. The old bluesmen (and women) were something else!

You have an obvious liking of female vocals. Have you ever seen this performance?

Carrie Underwood with Vince Gill How Great thou A...: http://youtu.be/pLLMzr3PFgk

Religious or not, this is one of the most powerful live vocals I've heard. The clarity and power of her voice gives me chills.

Pretty good, although I must admit I don't really know too much about her.

I've not really followed country music because there are precious few musicians in the genre that I have found who are not formulaic and boring. The ones that make music I like are people like Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, etc... all artists that veer more into the folk genre more so than strict country.

The only strictly "country" musician that really excites me has been Dwight Yoakam, becuase of the quality of his writing and his diversity and refusal to stick to Nashville's formulaic country format.

Like this song, with the incomparable Flaco Jimenez on accordion:

That will never get on today's country music radio lol....

BLM, to address your other point, I think we have a LOT of talented female singer/songwriters out there today, putting out new, innovative and often thought-provoking material. Where are Billy Joels, Jackson Brownes and Paul Simons of today? It seems that on the women's side, we have a couple of new and fabulous talents coming every year.

OK.. excellent singing! :D Like I said, I have heard the name but I don't really follow the genre, so I didn't know too much about her. Powerful singer, no doubt. I'll look for more of her stuff.

I think musicians and singers of that caliber have been in short supply for a long time.

All of her music isn't like that. Mostly poppy country but her vocal abilities are unquestionable. Nothing of hers tops that.
