It's funny, there was an episode of the podcast Freakonomics that dealt with how much environmentalism is just for show. LIke home windmills in Japan. Apparently, the societal pressure to look like they care for hte environment is so great that there is an entire industry devoted to windmills that actually have an electric motor in them, spinning them, rather than having them rotate in the wind.

There was also a study of California homeowners who had solar panels on their houses. Apparently a large percentage of people wanted their panels to face the street, even though the installers pointed out to them that due to the orientation of their houses, it would be much better to install them facing the backyard. It was cler that what was more important to the homeowners was to be seen by neighbors and passersby as environmentally conscious rather than actually put them in a place that would ben beneficial.

Yea Jeremy Clarckson on top gear is always pointing out just how dirty it actually is to make the Prius. Actually has a bigger carbon footprint than a Honda accord, corola etc..
