Pretty obscure. I mean, it is supposed to be the fastest growing sport in the country, but the average guy has never seen a rugby match or know anything about it. It will be quite a while before we can step on the pitch and hope to beat any of the top 5 or 6 countries. If you look at the Eagles team, I think 4 or 5 guys have professional contracts, everyone else is an amateur. Our halfback is a middle school teacher in New York City. He works all day, then trains in the evening. Hard to compete with Aaron Smith that way.
We need to get school kids playing rugby. You can't just take guys who dont make it in gridiron and suddenly turn them into rugby players. That's the kind of players we have right now - guys who are really strong and fast but don't have the instinctive rugby skills that the New Zealanders have, since they have been having a rugby ball in their hands since they were toddlers.
