Just started reading "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. It won the Pulitzer for Fiction in 2014.

    Wow, just wow!

FB, have you read this one? I can't put it down! Just finished the first section and I can see exactly why it won.

Thought this somewhat ties into this thread. I heard about it on the radio yesterday and thought it was pretty interesting: Shelf Awareness for Wednesday, October 7, 2015 | Shelf Awareness

Ahhh, I also started ATLWCS last night! However, I was restless and upon first glance it seemed like something I was going to need to pay attention to, so I stopped. I had heard such great things about it when it was in the Tournament of Books. Since it's a Pulitzer winner, I wanted to read it for that category. Now I can't wait! :thumb:

Scrum, I looked up the Huyler one because I thought it sounded perfect for the Asia category. But it seems it might be in Pakistan or somewhere over in those parts?

It is fictional, I think. One of the army guys in the story has a Hindu name and his superior has a Muslim nane, so that sounds like India which is a pluralistic society unlike Pakistan, but the currency is in "pounds" which doesn't make any sense. But all in all, seems more like Himalayan India, so it should work for the Asian category.

And the category really just says "takes place in Asia" - so it's very broad (which is great for me).

I'm about 2/3 of the way through All the Light We Cannot See.

Wow. The writing is sublime. I have read thousands of books but I can confidently say that among 20th century literature, this book is easily in the top 2 or 3. In fact, other than Rushdie's "The Moor's Last Sigh" and Ishiguro's " The Remains of the Day," I can't think of another book that is so beautifully written.

Just finished it last night. The ending is so sad and yet beautiful. It really brings out the humanity in all the characters. It really reminded me of the ending in "All Quiet on the Western Front." I wonder why both of these books with these poignant endings involve German soldiers...

                    32. Catastrophes - Asimov and Greenberg
                    33. Right of Thirst - Frank Huyler
                    34. All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr

Got about 9 weeks for the year to end. I think 50 is pretty unlikely unless I really step it up now.

I need to really step it up because I don't think I'm going to finish this challenge. :fight:

I still need to find a book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture. Any recommendations? Nothing too crazy, Scrum! :P

Oh, and a book published by an Indie press? :hmm:

                          Machiavelli The Prince

Fella speaks brutal truths about power and how to hold onto it. In essence, An end justifies the means.

I like it because it's only like 90 pages. :D

Great, great book with fantastic character development.

The protagonist is a middle aged cardiologist who is trying to deal with the death of his wife. He decides to take some time off volunteering at a refugee camp somewhere in Asia. The book explores how he rediscovers himself in the process.

A must-read in my opinion. Endlessly introspective with haunting prose. Highly recommended. 5 Stars!
Interesting. I think I'm actually gonna pick that book up!!
