It's an easy read - a bunch of chapters, each dealing with one topic. It will make you think.
I'm gonna give this one an attempt tonight. We shall see.

Thanks for the suggestion bro. FB, you're helpful as always. lol

I don't read those types of books. I'm not going to suggest Pride & Prejudice when you've specifically stated a category you want to read.

I gave a category I was interested in, I didn't say it's the only category. I figured with your experience with books there must be a few standouts that you could suggest.

            I actually completely missed this....

Military history from any century always peaks my interest btw.

and only saw this - which I cannot offer any recommendations.

I hate to say it, but I'm one of those people that loves to read, but it's rare that when I finish a book that I'm like "MAN, that was a fantastic book!" I'm sure that's mostly due to my choice of books. I think you should read All the Light We Cannot See. I'm currently reading it, and Scrum read it and highly recommended it. It's also about war (not in a documentary type way), which you enjoy.

Anthony Doerr has rapidly become my favorite author writing today. I decided to get his earlier short story collection called The Shell Collector.

Just finished it after a marathon 4 hour reading session

Wow, wow, wow. The stories are truly exceptional. He has these amazing protagonists but they also have this vulnerability that's just so touching.

And the language. It's to die for. I consider myself a highly informed aficionado of English literature but Doerr's use of simile and idiom is so exquisite, I have to read each passage a few times to let the imagery sink in. It is really quite remarkable, and his propensity to write in the present tense lends this air of immediacy to his storytelling that's really effective.

                Highly recommended!

But if you want to give it a go, try "The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman. It is about the events and situation in Europe that precipitated WW I. It is widely regarded as one of the best popular treatments of the subject.
Bouncer, did you get this book and start reading it?
