35. The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey – Spencer Wells
An excellent book on the the origin of modern humans and how geneticists figured out how humans emerged from Africa 50,000 years ago and populated every continent.
36. The Shell Collector: Stories – Anthony Doerr
Abother fantastic book, a collection of short stories from a writeer who has become my favorite contemporary author.
37. The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ - Philip Pullan
A very interesting book. Basically a retelling of the Bible the way it probably could have actually happened, without any need for magic or miracles or any of that stuff.
Trying to hit 40 before the year is done. A far cry from my goal of 50 books for the year but not too bad, all things considered.

38. Memory Wall: Stories - Anthony Doerr
Doerr is truly a master of his game, a Midas who turns anything he touches into gold.
Memory Wall, his collection of stories, is a magical book. It is about memories, the people who cling to them and the impermanence of everything, about how every day, memories are taken to the grave while others are created and the world makes itself over anew.
Beg, borrow or steal this book and read it. It is a truly wondrous creation.

This is good news IMO. I love tech and I love progress but for some reason I absolutely hate digital books. There was always something magical about the smell and feel of a book that made me want to pick it up as a kid. Digital books take that away. I'm not that way with games or movies, bring on the digital! But something about books is very different.

Yeah, the resellers on Amazon are great. My son had about 6 or 7 books on his humanities reading list this year in 6th grade and I picked up each of them for a couple of bucks from resellers, and most of them were almost in new condition. Screw buying new lol...

I know what you are saying about paper books though. But I've got used to the Kindle. Big advantage is that I can have almost my entire library on it, so I am not stuck to one book if I don't feel like reading it at any given time, plus I can change font size so I can read easier in my advancing years lol... I swear it seems like publishers have made their font just a little smaller over the years to cut their printing costs.

39. Smoke and Mirrors - Neil Gaiman.
Gaiman is an amazingly talented writer (Sandman and others) but this set of short stories left me cold. The ideas are great, his imagination is fantastic, but somehow the writing style does not appeal to me, at least in this collection. It's funny, because I really liked American Gods.
