  • Ethical question about Self Driving Cars

Heard this on top gear and it really got me thinking.

Self driving cars are coming, we all know this. At some point there will be a scenario where someone is in a self driving car and facing an unavoidable collision. The car with all of its sensors can make split second decisions about what to do. It either goes straight on and kills you or it swerves and saves your life. There is a catch though, by swerving and saving your life the car ran down a group of kids an killed them...

So the question is, what will the car do? Will it make the split second decision not to swerve because its sensors know the kids are there? Will it choose the impact instead and ultimately kill you?

Not to many things make me stop and go "oh shit" but this did for sure. Not sure how I feel about it to be honest.

No worries, override buttons will be standard on those cars:D

Let's imagine your not paying attention because after all its a self driving car and this all happens in a split second. What does the car do?

Is it programmed to save the life of its occupent or is it programmed to calculate potential lives lost outside the vehicle an sacrifice itself and you?

I vote that the car you are about to collide with does the swerving because he doesn't have kids on his side. :P

This question can also be applied to AI that is coming in the near future. Situations will arise where it has to make a serious choice just like humans do.

I think this may be the sort of thing that Elon Musk and Bill Gates are saying when they mention they have some real concerns about the dangers of AI currently in development.

Reminds me of A Space Odyssey 2001.

Avoidance of the issue at hand. Classic small minds. :cheese:

I can see it in the headlines now. The year is 2029. Self driving audi makes choice to kill 5 school children rather then smashing head on to group of 20 senor citizens.

I think as humans we would all agree that if we had to make a choice it would be better to kill 20 senior citizens rather than kill 5 children. But would the car make that choice? Would the car simply identify 20 humans vs 5 humans and assume that killing 5 is better than 20?

Cart ahead of the wagon. We are making the assumption there will be completely autonomous cars with the risk still being there. What about just braking or the car just breaking apart like an F1. Would people still be walking in areas where these cars are driving?

The speed is to high and to late for breaking. Outcome would be the same.

F1 cars break apart because they are made of carbon fiber but that does not mean that you would survive the G force of a head on collision at a certain speed.

You're trying to break the argument instead of addressing the issue. It would be ignorant to assume that there will not be unavoidable accidents where the car is faced with a split second decision that will take or save lives.

Not breaking the argument. The risk is there now for unavoidable accidents. Is the risk greater than if someone is texting and driving? If we are so aware of chosing the lesser of two evils why are we assuming we couldn't avoid the accident all together without sacrifice?

I'm just trying to imagine a situation of autonomous cars and unavoidable accidents. How did the cars get into that situation in the first place and how it would have been different with a manual car.
