My dad has a had a Jeep Cherokee for 20 years or so and it has not needed much maintenance. If you get an older vehicle it might be worth the money to take it to a garage and have a mechanic check it over.

I drove a jeep for 15 years. Got a 1987 Wrangler brand new.. Couldnt find terrain that it couldnt handle. I had it all over Eurpoe, and the states from the desert to florida beaches to several feet of snow in the alps. It had the straight 6 258 engine that was good reliable and strong.

Couple things youll want if your going into remote country with any 4x4..good winch....good old fashion tall bumper jack..ax... shovel good leather gloves. that will normally allow you to self recover in most situations.

Easy lip! Lol He's just going to drive to a trailhead on some hard packed dirt road. Lol.
Most SUVs even with just two wheel drive will handle most of the off road situations.

Beast, I'm also seeing a lot of 1st gen (91-95) manual transmission explorers with the 4.0 6cyl with relatively low miles for around 1500 or less. I might keep my eyes open for these as well, as they seem to have a fairly good rep in the off-road community, and this gen shares a lot of its pedigree with the Ranger.

First gen explorers are great for off-roading. You can't kill those things.
I've had three of them and in fact I just sold the one I had right before I bought the black truck. You should've made this thread two weeks ago. Lol. I was the second owner and I put tons of new parts in it before I sold it.

One thing about the first generation...they rattle like crazy every bump or a pothole will make it sound like a coffee can full of coins. Lol.

Stick with the second gen. It essentially same as the first gen with a different front suspension (not made for hard core off roading) but you'll never know. I had one and I couldn't get it stuck around what we have here.
If you get a 97 and up you'll get a more powerful SOHC V6 or 5.0 V8 from mustang.

They are really expensive. At least 2-2.5X for similar age/mileage.

                            Oh really?

Fair enough, not so bad over here.

I don't know enough about Jeep or GMC or your fords but I guess tgere is no shortage of replacement parts for those things over there so maybe that's the second best option as others gave said

96-2000. 96 gets exact same drivetrain as the first gen (engine transmission) but more sophisticated four wheel system. 97 and up gets a new V6 with 50 more HP which noticeably stronger.
Plus the first gen has no airbags and very funky seatbelt placement. 2nd gen has it adjustable.

20 year old is a 20 year old truck. Regardless of the brand.
Check out the links I posted. You'll find thousands of 20+ year old jeeps, fords and Chevys. Just keep replacing the wear and tear items and it'll keep going.
