  • Cozumel, Mexico

We just returned from our family trip to Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. I've been on this cruise before, and been to the Keys many times, so I was trying to find something different to do in Mexico - besides wandering around all the tourist shops with everyone trying to sell you tequila and junk.

I went with an excursion that took us first to the bay of Akumal ("place of the turtles") - where we snorkeled with sea turtles and stingrays. It was overcast out that day, so the clarity wasn't as great as it could have been, but as far as being right next to the giant turtles and rays, it was great.

Next they drove us to Cenote Dos Ojos, which is an underwater cave system. We snorkeled our way through a portion of it. The water is crystal clear (and cold!), and it's beautiful.

Just wanted to say I'd highly recommend it if you ever get the chance. :)

I actually don't have ANY pictures. I didn't know what to expect as far as what I could bring, etc, and honestly that part of the set up bothered me. We took a ferry from the ship to the city where the stuff is located. Then we took a van ride to the turtles and another van ride to the cave. They told us just leave our stuff in the van while we snorkeled. I expected some type of locker or something that was actually "safe." So I couldn't bring my camera/phone or anything. If I were to do it again, I'd know to bring a waterproof camera, I guess.

After the two different snorkeling places, they took us to a beach for a taco buffet. It was a genuine mexican restaurant, and they had different types of meats - pork, ground beef and ceviche. It was all really good. I had their rum punch and sangria and they were both terrible!
