Yeh it's just something I couldn't do. When I moved from a house to an apartment a few years back I actually let my dad take my dog. I thought she would be happier on a 70 acre property rather than a tiny apartment. She's been a great companion for him and she is free to run around all day.

All puppies need crate training. Nothing mean about it. It's how they learn to get potty trained and also keeps them from chewing up your house. I couldn't imagine if I left my boxer (when he was a pup) home by himself. lol Our couch would have been gone when we got home.
Now my dog will actually go and lay in his crate during the day when he gets tired. The door is open and not locked but he finds comfort there.

You mean to say you go out all day and leave the dog in a crate? How big is this crate. My dogs always had a yard and they would be fenced in and free to run around. They were potty trained in the yard. As far as I'm concerned you have no business owning a dog if you are locking it in a crate all day. Dogs are not like humans. They are not supposed to be in confined spaces.Originally posted by Chadd77 View PostAll puppies need crate training. Nothing mean about it. I have many acres that my dog is able to run and play. My wife works from home so he is never crated all day. Thanks for checking. :thumb:
I can guarantee that most people are not in my situation. Most do not have the land or luxury of someone home all day. And if you have a puppy that will chew and piss every where they need to be crated.

I agree with the sentiment behind your point brother. It's mainly for specific puppy use. during bedtime and when nobody is home which isnt very long. around 6 months In my experience crates are no longer needed. my boxer hasn't seen a crate in 10 years but he used it everyday when he was a pup. For those moments when the puppy needs to be completely alone or during the night for sleeping purposes. Without a crate a puppy (especially this type of breed) will wreak havoc in your house. trust me though, i understand your point. I've seen people that think keeping a dog locked in a cage all day is the idea behind owning a dog. I'd like to stab these people in the throat.Originally posted by redback View PostNo dog should ever be put in a crate unless its absolutely necessary. Maybe for travelling. Not trying to be a dick just my two cents.

I'm not against that idea fb but I haven't ever done that with my pups. they usually get straight pretty quick with how I am with them. All about positive reinforcement. When they do something good they know it and they get rewrded, when they do something bad I give them a disappointed look and use a disappointed tone in my voice. Sounds lame as fuck but I find that dogs in general want nothing more then to please there owners and this kind of praise or disappointment really works well if your consistent. Every single time she goes to the bathroom outside I make it a big event and pet her and tell her how good she is etc..Originally posted by FitnessBrat View Post
B - are you planning on taking her to some training/obedience puppy classes?
again though, i would certainly consider it if my way doesnt work with this pup. she is already making good progress though.

So the previous owner sent me a text last night saying how much he and th family missed her and how they might have made a mistake giving her up, i think he was fishing to see if I'd offer her back..
I responded that I understand but that this decision was not made lightly and he had a month to think and discuss this with his family and they came to the conclusion that she was better off with me. i told him that I've already diedicated my self to turning her into a model citizen Amstaff. He apolagized and said his emotions got the best of him and that he shouldn't have sent the text..
he's gonna need an army to get her back I'll tell you that. the family is welcome to come out and pet her when I walk by but they will see me turn into a devil on earth if they ever tried to take her. Roar..

Apparently the puppy had pulled his 8 year old son down on a walk and he really hurt his foot. The father has bad diabetes so they seem to know that they aren't the right people for the breed. He mentioned getting a smaller dog for the son for Christmas. They are good people, just not ideal for this kind of dog.

I totally get what you are saying. And that's awesome that you were willing to do that for your dog because I'm sure she is much happier there.

It isn't lame, it's the truth. Dogs will love their owner no matter what they do to them (unfortunately). And that's exactly what you're supposed to do! I still do that with Zorro and he's 4, lol.
I took my GS too a private trainer a few times (for jumping!) Try it sometime. 60 seconds ends up being a long time! But it does make you realize how happy it makes them. :swoon:
