  • IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson in Coma After Being Hit by Crash Debris

This series is quickly becoming the crash series. Yesterday's race was a bit ridiculousness. Seemed like every single race restart would result in an immediate crash which resulted in a cycle of track clean up and crashes.

One of the crashes yesterday was pretty serious.

yea fucking sucks. 5 and 7 year old daughters. great driver.

hate to say it because it's rich history but open cockpit cars need to end. Keep the car exactly the same but just add in a fighter jet style canopy over the cockpit. would improve aerodynamics anyway. a canopy like that would have easily prevented the death of Justin Wilson, prevented the death of Dan Wheldon a couple years ago, it would have saved Jules from dieing last year, it would have saved Massa from being blasted in the head and almost dieing a couple years ago.

indy and formula 1 know it will save lives but they are afraid that the fans will abanoned the series because it will no longer be open wheel racing. Fuck the fans if they are too stupid to understand progress and safty.

Not sure why having a cockpit cover makes it less of open WHEEL racing. I agree - pretty straightforward and sensible solution to improve driver safety.

Duh scrum, the wheel and cockpit will no longer be exposed to the open air.

Don't get that.. why not just enclose the region I have shown in the green, basically like a jet fighter lexan cockpit cover? That way, the driver is protected but the wheels are still outside the main car, i.e. open wheel.

That's exactly what I said bro. Lol. Put a jet fighter canopy over the driver. The "wheel" I was referring to was the steering wheel.

See, you are confusing me now.

In Post 3, you say "the fans will abanoned the series because it will no longer be open wheel racing." Sounds based on this and on Post 7 above that you are referring to the steering wheel.

When I think of "open wheel" racing, I'm not thinking about the steering wheel but the actual wheel. I'm pretty sure that's what people refer to when then talk about open wheel racing, where the wheels stick outside the body of the car as opposed to beng enclosed in the wheel well. So, enclosing the cockpit won't make it any less "open wheel." :dunno:
