Are people freaking insane? Really. Does ANYONE know what it takes to make a clock "from scratch," whatever that means? What's he supposed to do, collect sand from the beach and melt it into silicon and fabricate his own chips?

Look, I don't know what the kid was thinking. I also don't think he is a genius or anything. He built a clock using a timer chip and a display. He probably found the plan online. But he is a bright kid with initiative. At an age when most kids are doing everything they can to set themselves up to be colossally mediocre in adulthood, he actually seems like he will end up as an engineer or scientist and actually do something useful for society.

I used to really admire Dawkins but he's turned into a tired and bitter old man. Senility, perhaps? He is the kind of guy who sees a bear riding a unicycle and playing the violin at the same time and instead of celebrating this, complains that the animal is not playing in tune.

I saw the tweet calling out Ahmed claining to have "invented" the clock. Really, guys? Kids do that all the time. These old farts, it's been so long since they were children and they have become so bitter in the meantime that they seem to have forgotten it. I don't expect a 14 year old to be thinking, "ok, I put this thing together, so is it an invention or a discovery or something else. Let me see exactly what word to use!" The kid is excited, he may claim it is an invention without really understanding what the world means precisely. And we are going to keelhaul him for that? It is really grotesque and churlish.

My son is 15, sophomore in HS. He is really interested in math and is studying integral calculus. He came up with some cool detail about how infinitesmals sum up, a really intuitive conclusion about calculus. He said that he "discovered" it and was really excited. Now, it is something that Leibniz figured out a long time ago. I didn't chew him out for claiming something that is not true. I praised him for "rediscovering" this fact, and showed him what Leibniz did a while ago.

The kid claimed something in his enthusiasm that was perhaps an exaggeration. Why do people have to be pricks about it? They'd rather have him spend all his time playing video games and hanging out at the mall? Sheesh!

I helped my kid over the weekend build her clock for the science fair. Very proud of her.

Gotta admit scrum, this doesn't look good. Kid went and met with a guy wanted for war crimes.

I wouldn't read too much into it. The family is from Sudan, right? They were probably visiting and the President there made them an offer they couldn't refuse lol..

See scrum as much as I've agreed with you in this thread I think I'm going to have to disagree on this one. I think your giving them to much the benefit of doubt here. It's very unlikely they were forced to go meet a fucken war criminal. I think the father of this kid is a bit of a scum bag.

Maybe so, but don't underestimate the power the guy probably wields in Sudan. If the boy's father still had family, property, etc in Sudan and the President's goons show up and encourage you to attend a dinner reception at the palace, you may not be in a position to decline the offer. I've lived in 3rd world countries and I know how this works. Beast will be able to weigh in on this.

Anyhow, the kid is not going to have anything to do with it anyway.

I guess. I don't see why he would even take his son back there in the first place. He brought his son here for a reason, a better fucken life. Why go back? I was born on the East coast, that's my "home" and there are actually a lot of difference between the east coast and the west, from culture to landscape to the people themselves. But guess what, if I never see the east coast again tough shit, fuck the east coast. So I don't buy this "he just wanted to visit home again" crap. It's fucking Sudan for fuck sake.

First generation immigrant, bro. The emotional pull of the old country is strong. It will disappear in a generation.

It he's getting a full ride scholarship, then why not? It's not like his school and community in Texas were anything special lol..

Again, I can see both sides here but when something seems a bit off it usually is. The father's actions throughout this ordeal are suspect to say the least. It's unlikely that a full scholarship in Qatar is the sole reason for the move.

Scrum at this point I think the kid could be found with a RPG and you'd dismiss it as engineering curiosity on the kids part. lol. I'm not saying the kid has done anything wrong but I think a healthy bit of suspicion of the actions made by the father AFTER the incident is warranted. i think you're so ready to defend these people that you're a bit biased in your argument. I don't blame you, the endless retards making ridiculous claims about this kid is maddening, I get it.
