Lamar Odom is reportedly still unconscious and breathing with the aid of machines, more than 12 hours after being taken to the hospital upon being discovered unresponsive at a legal brothel in Nevada.
The 35-year-old Odom, who last played in the NBA in 2013, arrived on Saturday at the Love Ranch in Crystal, Nev., about a 90-minute drive from Las Vegas. Brothel owner Dennis Hof told the Associated Press that Odom “just wanted to get away, have a good time and relax,” and that he seemed to be “happy.” Hof also told the Los Angeles Times that Odom appeared “somber” on Sunday, but was in good spirits otherwise.
Odom, who was staying at Hof’s home adjoining the brothel, ordered a bottle of cognac over the weekend but did not finish it by Tuesday. Hof said his employees claimed Odom was taking herbal Viagra, but did not see him use illegal drugs.
Employees saw Odom early Tuesday morning, but when they went to check on him around 3 p.m. they found him unconscious, and when they turned him over “terrible stuff came out” of his nose and mouth. According to a release from the Nye County Sheriff’s Office, at 3:15 they received a call from the Love Ranch’s media director requesting an ambulance. It arrived at 3:34, and Odom was taken to the hospital at 4:16. His condition was serious enough that doctors wanted to airlift him to a bigger hospital, but Odom was too large for the helicopter and was driven instead to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.
Sunrise Hospital has not released any information on Odom’s condition, but TMZ reported early this morning that Odom is comatose and on a ventilator, and is having serious problems with his heart, lungs and kidneys. E! News says Odom’s condition is critical and that he never regained consciousness.
Odom’s life has been filled with tragedy. Born to a drug addicted father, he was raised by his grandmother after his mother passed away from colon cancer. His six-month-old son died from SIDS in 2006, and in 2011, while returning to New York for a cousin’s funeral, he was a passenger in a car accident that killed a 15-year-old boy. He’s long battled substance abuse problems, including at least one reported rehab stint. “Life is so fragile,” Odom told the New York Times in 2006. “I’ve got so much to live for.”
